“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

– John Muir

This is one of my favourite quotes of all time. There is something in the mountains that reminds you of how incredibly powerful nature can be and how, in the grand scheme of this universe, we are nothing but mere dust particles. Mountains test you in the best possible way and push you out of your comfort zone. They make you stronger and humbler.

The best part is that India has a plethora of hill stations to offer to all kinds of tourists and travellers. But how do you decide which hill station to explore?

So, we’ve prepared a list of the top hill stations in India — home to gorgeous mountains — that we’ve visited so far, along with their highlights to help you decide. We’ve also hyperlinked the guides for some hill stations to help you plan better.

We’ll keep updating this list as and when we visit more hill stations in India. Hope you find this guide useful!

Top Hill Stations in India That We Have Visited So Far

North India

Rajgundha

Distance from Delhi: 512 km
Duration: 2– 3 days
Budget: INR 5,000

Rajgundha is undoubtedly one of the best hill stations in Himachal Pradesh, especially because it remains an offbeat destination. Very few people are aware of this hidden village, and most choose to trek here, which has helped it stay untouched and free from the commercialisation seen in other popular hill stations across Himachal.

Nestled amidst the stunning Dhauladhar ranges, Rajgundha Valley truly feels like paradise.

One of the best things about this place is the crisp, fresh air, free from pollution. And at night, you’re treated to a breathtaking view of the stars and, on clear nights, even the majestic Milky Way. Many people visit Rajgundha to escape the chaos of city life, and once here, they often find it hard to leave this magical valley.

Best Time to Visit: October to June

How to Reach: Take a bus from Delhi to Bir Billing or Barot. From there, you can trek to Rajgundha village.

Ladakh

Distance from Delhi: 1,000 km

Duration: 10 days

Budget: INR 15,000

A beautiful barren valley, famously known as the Cold Desert of India, Ladakh offers a completely different landscape from other hill stations in India. Here, you’ll also find several trekking trails and high-altitude passes waiting to be explored.

The weather in Ladakh changes quite drastically, but that’s part of the adventure — facing and overcoming these challenges can be truly exhilarating.

Ladakh is both thrilling and humbling, and at almost every turn, you’ll find yourself reaching for your camera to capture the surreal beauty. So, if you’re looking for an exciting destination to explore in North India, Ladakh is undoubtedly one of the best.

Best Time to Visit: June to September (for road trips)

How to Reach:

You can take a direct flight to Leh from Delhi. If you’re keen on a road trip, there are two popular routes:

  • One from Manali to Leh (more challenging but extremely scenic)
  • One from Srinagar to Leh (considered easier and great for altitude acclimatisation)

Auli

Distance from Delhi: 760 km

Duration: 4 days

Budget: INR 4,500

One of the best hill stations in Uttarakhand, Auli offers breathtaking views of the Upper Himalayas, including the majestic Nanda Devi peak. Auli also serves as the base camp for several treks, such as Kuari Pass and the Valley of Flowers.

Here, you’ll also come across the highest man-made lake in India, designed to help with artificial snow during the skiing season. Plus, Auli is home to one of the longest cable car rides in Asia, connecting Joshimath to Auli — a ride that offers stunning panoramic views of snow-capped peaks.

Auli is incredibly beautiful, and I’m so glad I could visit. Being there feels like standing in the middle of a giant amphitheatre, surrounded entirely by towering mountains.

Best Time to Visit: December to March (ideal for snow and skiing)

How to Reach:
There are no direct buses to Auli. From Delhi, you first need to reach Rishikesh. From there, you can either take a bus or a shared taxi to Joshimath, and finally a cable car or a road journey up to Auli.

Spiti

Distance from Delhi: 740 km

Duration: 10 days

Budget: INR 10,000

We all have so many pictures of Spiti, but nothing will ever be able to do justice to its incomparable beauty. One of the best places to visit in India, Spiti has everything that you could ever wish for – lush green valley, river streams, mountain peaks, snow, cold desert, and so on. Spiti is known as the middle land since it lies right in the middle of Tibet and India.

To be honest, it will be a challenging tour, especially if you travel by bus, because on average, only one bus leaves at a time from one place to another. The network is really bad here, with only the BSNL network working, and there is no Internet connection. However, it is all about perspective — it is actually good to stay cut off from the rest of the world for a few days.

Best Time: June to September

How to Reach:

To reach Spiti, you can follow two paths. One is from Manali, and the other is from Reckong Peo, which is in Kinnaur. Both of them are equally good, and buses run from these places except during winter.

During winters, the Manali route shuts down due to heavy snowfall on that side. The Reckong Peo route usually remains open for a longer time, but conditions can be tough, so it’s important to check the local updates before planning a winter trip.

Kinnaur

Distance from Delhi: 600 km

Duration: 6 days

Budget: INR 6,000

Being a small district in the upper Himalayas, this place is not only gorgeous but also has a strong history. There is so much to learn about the people here, including how they used to leave their early lives, and trust me, all of it is very fascinating.

The Kinner Kailash ranges are completely breathtaking and can be seen from most parts of Kinnaur. Chitkul is the last village before the China border, which has an altogether different feel to it.

Best Time:

April to May – Flowering season

June to August – Apple season

Feb to March – Winter season

How to Reach: There are direct buses that leave from Delhi to Reckong Peo – the main bus stand in Kinnaur. However, the ride is almost 18 hours, which can be really tiresome. An alternative would be to make a stop in Chandigarh or Shimla to reach Kinnaur.

You can also hire a cab from Shimla if you prefer a more comfortable journey. The road conditions are often rough in some stretches, so it’s recommended to check the weather updates during the winter months, as landslides and road closures are common.

Permit Information:

For Indian citizens, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is usually not required for most parts of Kinnaur, including Chitkul. However, if you plan to explore areas closer to the Indo-Tibet border, like Nako or Shipki La, you might need a permit, which can be arranged in Reckong Peo. Foreign nationals require permits for the entire region beyond Pooh.

Munsiyari

Distance from Delhi: 600 km

Duration: 4 days

Budget: INR 4,500

Munsiyari lies in the upper region of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, and it offers a calm allure once you reach here. Munsiyari also offers a gorgeous view of the Panchachuli Peaks, and one can witness the most magnificent sunrises here.

One can also go trekking to various places from here. The most sought-after and moderate-difficulty trek is the Khalia Top trek, which provides an unparalleled view of the Panchachuli Peaks from a height.

Best Time: Throughout the Year

How to Reach:

There are no direct buses to Munsiyari. The best approach would be to take an overnight bus from Delhi to Haldwani or a train to Kathgodam, and then take another bus or a shared taxi from there.

From Kathgodam or Haldwani, you can also hire a private taxi if you prefer a more comfortable and flexible journey. The roads from Haldwani to Munsiyari are scenic but winding, so it’s recommended to start early to avoid night driving in the hills. During winters, heavy snowfall can sometimes block the roads near Munsiyari, so checking the weather updates before your trip is advisable.

Khajjiar

Distance From Delhi: 575 km

Budget: INR 2,000

In terms of landscapes, Khajjiar doesn’t have much to offer apart from a plain ground and the famed Khajjiar lake. Khajjiar is often called the “Mini Switzerland of India” because of its scenic meadow and dense deodar forest surroundings. However, one can indulge in a lot of adventure activities here. You can try water zorbing, horse riding, or even dress up as a Himachali to get your photographs clicked.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, then you can also try paragliding here, which will offer you an unparalleled view of the nearby mountains.

Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

Badrinath

Distance From Delhi: 560 km

Duration: 4 days

Budget: INR 2,500

To be honest, I didn’t expect Badrinath to be as beautiful as it was. While the way to this hill station is slightly treacherous, it feels quite exciting at the same time. And it isn’t like any other pilgrim hill station that you have ever been to. The houses and hotels here are neatly packed, and one can see the valley view with the Saraswati River flowing strongly in the middle.

Also, it becomes quite colourful here at night, and you can also head to Mana (the last village of India), which is situated just 3 km from here.

Best Time to Visit: June – November

How to Reach:

You will first need to reach Rishikesh from Delhi. Then, take a bus to Badrinath.

During peak pilgrimage season (May–June), it’s good to book your stay in advance as Badrinath gets quite crowded. Roads are also prone to landslides during the monsoon (July-August), so plan accordingly.

Hemkund

Frankly, I didn’t have much idea about Hemkund or how the landscape looked until I actually trekked to this place. And boy, was I pleasantly surprised on my visit. Hemkund is located at a height of 4,633m, which is why it stays cold throughout the year. Here, you have the famous Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, which is built just next to the magical lake and surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks.

This place is going to make you speechless because the entire landscape is just too beautiful to describe. Also, the trek to this hill station is quite picturesque, so you are in for a treat when visiting this place.

This UNESCO Heritage Site is famous for its June–September bloom, where you can observe a plethora of flora species. Trust me, the burst of colours and the sweet fragrance in the valley make it hard for you to leave this place.

So, if you are ever planning to explore Uttarakhand during monsoon, make sure you add the Valley of Flowers to your bucket list. The trek to the valley is about 4 km from Ghangaria.

I am not exaggerating when I say that this place will remind you of the childhood stories that you were ever-so-fond of.

Best Time to Visit: July – September. Valley of Flowers is usually accessible only from early July to early October, as the trekking route is covered in snow the rest of the year.

One can explore the cafes here, which are the speciality of Manali, as well as go to Solang Valley and Vashisht. From Vashisht, you can also hike for half an hour to experience the Jogini Waterfalls.

Araku Valley

While not the most popular hill station in India, Araku Valley certainly has a unique charm that sets it apart from other places. Here, you can experience the chill of the hills and the sight of a gorgeous, lush green valley that feels absolutely magical.

Since this is a less-frequented destination, you can truly take some time off from the world and give yourself space to think and feel. You can explore the tribal crafts, museums, and various viewpoints to pass your time here. One of the major highlights of visiting Araku Valley is the scenic train journey — the ride takes you through tunnels, waterfalls, and endless greenery, making it an experience in itself.

Munnar

Distance From Bangalore: 540 km

Duration: 3 days

Budget: INR 2,500

Munnar is one of my favourite hill stations in India, not just because it’s a popular destination, but because it was the place where I went on my second solo trip. What made the experience even more special was choosing to stay on the outskirts of Munnar, away from the usual touristy chaos.

That decision gifted me views I couldn’t have even dreamed of — untouched landscapes, magical sunsets, and an overwhelming sense of peace. If you’re willing to go a little farther than the popular spots, Munnar will reward you with some of the most breathtaking scenes you’ll ever witness.

Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

How to Reach:

Munnar is well connected by road and rail. You can catch a direct bus from Bangalore to Munnar, which is both convenient and scenic. If you prefer a combination of train and road travel, take a train to Ernakulam (the nearest major railway station) and then board a state-run or private bus to Munnar, which is around 130 km away and takes about 4–5 hours by road. Cabs are also available for a more comfortable drive through Kerala’s winding tea estate roads.

Kotagiri

Kotagiri is yet another hidden gem tucked away in South India — a place we had no idea about until we quite literally stumbled upon it. On a 4-day trip to Ooty, we found the town a bit too touristy for our liking, so we decided to explore further, and that’s when Kotagiri completely won us over.

This peaceful hill station, with its untouched charm and postcard-worthy landscapes, turned out to be one of the best decisions we made on that trip. The place is quiet, pristine, and away from the usual crowds. Kotagiri is also home to some stunning tea plantations, so if you’re someone who enjoys nature walks, scenic views, and tranquil vibes, this is definitely one for your bucket list.

Ooty

Distance From Bangalore: 280 km

Duration: 3 days

Budget: INR 3,000

Ooty, often referred to as the “Queen of Hill Stations,” is one of the most popular hill stations in India. However, over the years, it has become quite crowded, especially during peak seasons. If you aren’t into the typical touristy attractions, you might find the town itself a little underwhelming, but the surrounding areas more than make up for it!

You can explore offbeat gems like Avalanche Forest Reserve, which is known for its serene landscapes and untouched beauty, or head to Mudumalai National Park for a chance to spot elephants and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

And no trip to Ooty is complete without experiencing the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train ride — a UNESCO World Heritage experience offering breathtaking views of the hills and valleys as the train winds through tunnels, bridges, and tea plantations. Did you know that the famous song of Shah Rukh Khan, Chaiyya Chaiyya, was shot here?

Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

Chikmagalur

Distance From Bangalore: 245 km

Duration: 3 days

Budget: INR 3,000

Although I ended up visiting Chikmagalur during the wrong season, it still managed to leave a lasting impression on me. Tucked away in the Western Ghats, this hill station is the perfect escape when you want to take a break from the sweltering heat.

A fun fact about Chikmagalur is that it is believed to be the birthplace of coffee cultivation in India! Coffee was first introduced here in the 17th century when a Sufi saint named Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen.

One of the best ways to experience Chikmagalur is by road, as public transport options are limited. A road trip allows you to soak in the landscapes at your own pace and explore hidden spots along the way.

Best Time to Visit: July – November

How to Reach:

The nearest major city is Bangalore, which is around 245 km away. The most convenient way to reach Chikmagalur is via a self-driving car or bike — the route is scenic and well-maintained, making it perfect for a weekend road trip.

Hassan

Distance From Bangalore: 185 km

Duration: 2 days

Budget: INR 3,000

We had originally planned a trip to Sakleshpur, but as luck would have it, we ended up in Hassan instead and honestly, it turned out to be a happy accident. Hassan was the perfect place to just kick back, relax, and soak in some quality time with friends.

We trekked to a nearby mountaintop for sunset, stumbled upon a beautiful meadow, and spent the day unwinding in this peaceful, less-crowded town. If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers quiet corners over tourist-packed spots, Hassan makes for a fantastic weekend getaway.

Best Time to Visit: August – December

How to Reach:

The easiest and most convenient way to reach Hassan is by road. It’s about 185 km from Bangalore, and the drive takes roughly 4–5 hours via NH75. Renting a car or taking your own vehicle is ideal, as it gives you the flexibility to explore nearby attractions like Belur, Halebidu, and Shettihalli Church Ruins at your own pace.

Horsley Hills

Horsley Hills

Although this is one of the smallest hill stations in India, and no, I’m not exaggerating. It still packs a peaceful punch. In fact, it’s so compact that you can explore the entire place on foot in just 6–7 hours.

The charm of Horsley Hills lies in its simplicity: pleasant weather all year round, serene viewpoints, and winding eucalyptus-scented paths. It’s the perfect spot when you need a quick escape from your fast-paced routine without too much planning or effort.

Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

How to Reach:

Horsley Hills is well-connected via road. You can take a bus from Bangalore to Madanapalle (about 4–5 hours), and from there, catch a local bus or an auto for the last 25 km to reach Horsley Hills.

Cherrapunji

Distance from Guwahati: 1100 km

Cherrapunji holds the title of being one of the wettest places on Earth, thanks to its heavy rainfall, which gives the entire region a lush, emerald-green vibe almost year-round. Along with its natural beauty, the warmth and hospitality of the local Khasi people make the experience even more special.

One of the absolute highlights is visiting the Double Decker Living Root Bridges, which are marvels formed naturally by guiding the roots of rubber trees across streams and rivers until they strengthen into sturdy bridges. Reaching this hidden gem involves a memorable descent of around 3,000 stairs to the village of Nongriat, where you’ll also find the enchanting Rainbow Falls tucked deep inside the forest.

One of its most famous spots is Elephant Falls, a multi-tiered cascade that’s perfect for photos and nature walks. Another must-visit is Shillong Peak, the highest point in the area, which offers panoramic views of the entire city wrapped in clouds.

When it comes to staying in Shillong, Police Bazar is the go-to hub for most travellers — a lively market area filled with shops, cafés, and street food. How to Reach:

If you’re coming from a distance, the most scenic and flexible way to explore Shillong and the nearby spots is to rent a scooter or a bike from Guwahati. This gives you full freedom to roam at your own pace and stop wherever the views demand. Shared cabs are also available from Guwahati and Shillong, but they usually follow fixed routes and schedules, so you’ll have limited freedom to explore offbeat spots.

Lachung

Distance From Kolkata: 745 km

Duration: 2 days

Budget: INR 2,000

Generally, I don’t compare Indian places with European countries, but Lachung is certainly the Switzerland of India. In fact, it is better than Switzerland. It is situated in the north of Sikkim and is a small, quaint town where you get to witness the most beautiful views ever.
And if you are lucky, then you also get a chance to experience rainfall, in the middle of March!

Best Time to Visit: Throughout the Year

How to Reach:

If you want a place that is gorgeous and lush green during the monsoons, then Mahabaleshwar is the perfect place for you. This is one of the most amazing hill stations in India, on the western ghats and offers amazing viewpoints, waterfalls, and forts for you to explore.

Personally, I loved exploring the Lingmala waterfall and the Elephant Point (yes, the mountaintop is actually shaped like an elephant head). So, I would highly recommend that you visit this hill station during the monsoons.

The first time I heard the song, “Aati Kya Khandala?”, I knew I had to visit this place. And boy, what fun it was to actually explore this hill station! Although it’s an extremely touristy spot due to its close proximity to both Mumbai and Pune, it still offers amazing views that will leave you speechless.

The Khandala Sunset Point is certainly my favourite, along with Lion’s Point, Duke’s Nose Point, and Bhushi Dam. However, a word of advice: avoid visiting during the spring season, as you won’t find much greenery around, which can definitely spoil the charm of the valley views.

Matheran

Matheran

Distance From Mumbai: 81 km

Duration: 1-2 days

Budget: INR 1,500

The first time we visited this hill station, we didn’t realise there was so much to see around here because it was completely covered in fog. However, when I visited again in March, I finally understood how much this place has to offer. There are so many incredible viewpoints here that give you a stunning view of the Sahyadri mountains.

And while it looks greener during the monsoon, winters would be a better time to explore if you actually wish to enjoy clear valley views.

Best Time to Visit: July – October

How to Reach:

Matheran is one of the few hill stations in India where vehicles aren’t allowed beyond a certain point, which makes the journey all the more fun and unique.

  • If you’re driving your own vehicle, you can reach Dasturi Naka and park there.
  • From Dasturi Naka, it’s about a 1-hour trek to the top, or you can also opt for horse rides or hand-pulled rickshaws if you prefer a more laid-back journey.

Now, if you are not sure which hill stations are worth visiting, all you can do is take a look at this list. Do you have any suggestions? Feel free to leave them in the comment box!
